Atam, I'm not sure exactly why a cable swap resolved the issue I was experiencing after installing the replacement panel. Regardless, the cable is $10 and in order to have a working system, not that big of an issue in the grand scheme of things. If you're going to go through with the swap I would recommend getting the cable regardless, but as I mentioned the computer was completely stock, and the increased resolution was definitely worth it. HP clearly lists a specific cable for the low and high resolution displays. Though I couldn't tell any differences between them by looking at them, it definitely made the difference.

ok, thanks.

Why i ask:

Some HD+ screens have lvds 1 channel connection and some 2 channel.
The original 1366 was definitively a 1 channel.

If the new one as a 2-channel, that will be why you needed another cable i think.
The bonus questios is: Would you need another lvds cable if you used a 1-channel HD+ screen?

I hope not... but i can only know if i get the oem brand/model # and look-up its #channels.

Atam, unfortunately I don't have that laptop anymore to tell you what the original screen was. But the part numbers from HP make finding what the stock part numbers are pretty easy. The new screen is the same one I linked to in the article, and are available from amazon here : http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006D9UOQW?tag=thnete-20

Rory,

The process itself is a long one, but if you follow the manual and take your time, it's really pretty easy.
There are a couple of smaller cables which you need to watch for and as I mentioned above, just take your time and you've got this!
It's a great feeling in the end as well knowing that you did it yourself.

If you run into any problems, just let me know and I'll see how I can help.

Hi Matt,

I'm super glad that I found your post! I will be going on the same screen-replacing journey as you did very soon. I just purchased a 1600x900 screen for my EliteBook 8460p from a shady online screen importer (lol), as well as the corresponding HD+ cable from HP's parts store. They should both be arriving soon.

In the past, I've replaced a broken bulb and inverter from a laptop LCD screen, so removing and disassembling the screen isn't something that I'm too worried about. However, the thought of replacing the display cable terrifies me! As I understand it, you actually have to open up the bottom of the laptop in order to replace that cable because it's connected to the motherboard.

Hoping to allay my fears, I went searching for instructions on how to go about the process. I wasn't able to find any, but I did stumble upon your post, as well as a YouTube video of someone removing the monitor from a Dell.

My question to you is this: Was your process of replacing the display cable similar to what was shown in that video? If it was, it looks like there are a ton of other cables and screws that you need to deal with before being able freely access the display cable! Looking at the 8640p's manual (page 110), it seems that the process is actually significantly more difficult than for that Dell.

I'm sweating bullets here. I hope the payout is worth it. :-)

Congrats on your successful upgrade!!

May your be blessed with huge uptimes!

I decided to pay from my pocket a screen upgrade to a company provided 8460p, the part was dificult to get, but arrived on the 12th of november and, alas! wrong picture.

A bit of googling took me to your page and experience, so complete and detailed, that I was releived and saved. I have ordered the missing cable, fear the upgrade (it looks hairy, really) but I have hopes of a much improved machine. Thanks for sharing your experience, this page is an example of whay maked Internet worth.

yours forever,

I use snapshots on Virtualbox similar to Steady State or Deep Freeze. I keep a Windows install on my Fedora laptop, which I use for school among other things, because, unfortunately, there are times where I need MS Office or VS.NET. Since I save all my work in a shared folder on the host, I don't need to worry with keeping changes made to the guest OS, so I don't. Once I got the guest set up, programs installed, CCleaned, and defragged, I created a snapshot. When I'm done working, I close VBox and tell it to restore the current snapshot.
