My apologies,
You're correct in the fact that 2008 does come in 32bit, but really the memory requirements of the server as well as any service that's installed on the machine are extremely prohibitive running in a 32 bit environment.
There really isn't a good reason for installing the 32 bit server on a box capable of 64 bit, especially if you're going with a Hyper-V install.

As far as upgrading SAP and 2008, those really need to be tackled as two separate projects, simply due to the enormous scope of both upgrades.

Good luck!

Is SAP 7.1 only available on Windows Server 2008 64 Bit?

Being that 2008 server is only 64bit, there’s no excuse for deploying a box with anything less than 6GB of RAM.

I know for a fact that there is a 32 bit version of Windows Server 2008, but some things are not available on 32 Bits such as Hyper-V. Also Exchange 2007 requires 64 Bits to be installed. But I didn't know for that requirement with SAP 7.1
I am looking into an upgrade for one of my clients to Server 2008 and he is a SAP user and was thinking about upgrading SAP at the same time..
